Artist's Statement
It seems that everyone is interested in collage - maybe because they aren’t as familiar with it as watercolors or painting in oil. For that reason I have presented some of the thinking processes that have gone into the work you see displayed.
I love being surprised when I’m painting in my studio because that indicates to me that I have worked from the creative side of my brain. Those are the times when creativity is at its peak and I produce my best work. Color and the combinations that can be created hold a special fascination which is probably why I’m so enthralled with sunrises, sunsets and rainbows.
Collage is a favorite technique because its foundation is design. Without a good foundation, it just doesn’t work and yet, as I work at placing the papers and/or objects or taking them away, when they find their correct home, it is almost an ‘ah hah’ moment for me. Often I add objects that have special meaning, i.e. an old family photo, my mother’s tatting. Other times I might have a story I want to tell or something humorous will present itself. Then I usually will follow that path. Sometimes it works and maybe not, but I learn from the journey. More often than not however, I get inspiration from colors, the lovely papers that can be made or purchased and perhaps music. I have no set pattern and that’s the fun of it all. When I have allowed my art to speak and someone else can understand, then I’ve been successful.
